Benefit Concert at The Shop a Success!

Tonight was Water For Sudan’s major event of the year, a benefit concert at The Shop.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the cause, and to The Shop for hosting us!

At 8:10 PM, the first band, Willie and the Doodlebops, took the stage after a brief explanation of Water for Sudan by club coordinator Adam Polaski. An acoustic group featuring two Ithaca College sophomores and one guitar, they played songs like “The Rose” and the theme song from Drake and Josh. Although the band members apologized for being somewhat unprepared, blaming finals week understandably, the audience seemed to enjoy their fun and casual style.

After the first band, Water for Sudan member Samantha Wolfe talked about Water for Sudan, the national organization. Water for Sudan was founded by a Lost Boy, a refugee of the civil war in Sudan who wanted to give back to his community.

You’d probably recognize the two Ithaca College students who comprise the second band, Passing Through, if you’re a fan of the incredibly popular Ithacapella. But these musicians weren’t a cappella tonight, using percussion and guitars to play an upbeat, rhythmic set featuring covers of songs by Jimi Hendrix and the Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as original music. They even played a Sufjan Stevens song they had wanted to perform for a while and an awesome medley of various songs that use the same chord progression as Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.”

Passing Through

Zach Birnbaum played a set of original music next. Though some people left between acts, others arrived, and everyone was a fan of his mellow acoustic style. Zach Birnbaum’s first CD is available on iTunes and CD Baby.

The final act, Ryan Clover, played a folk set on his banjo after discussing the issue of gas drilling in the Ithaca region, a controversy that people fear will limit clean water in our region. He made a connection to the reason for the benefit, saying that people need clean water everywhere. For more information on gas drilling around Ithaca, check out the film The Frak Attack.

Check out The Shop, Ithaca's coolest new performance venue right off of The Commons, to catch some sick acoustic music right before finals! Take a study break by chilling out for an hour or two - and giving back in the process! Water for Sudan's benefit concert is Thursday, December 10 at 8pm at The Shop, located at 312 East Seneca St.

This is Water for Sudan's last fundraiser of the semester, and we hope you're all excited to help us out! There's just a $3 suggested donation at the concert, and all of the money will directly benefit Water for Sudan, the international organization that constructs safe-water wells in southern Sudan, where potable water is severely limited. Our money will go toward sponsoring one well for a village that needs those resources.

Performers include Willie and the Doodlebops (Willie Sleight & Eric Wysocki of IC Voicestream doing covers of your favorite Top 40 songs), Harry Nichols & Rob Dietz of Ithacappella, IC junior Zach Birnbaum in original acoustic awesome, AND Ryan Clover offering folk fare.

Email icwaterforsudan@gmail.com for more information, and check out our table in Campus Center all week!

Invisible Children: What to look for next semester

Next semester, IC 4 IC will be more involved in hosting events and advocating for Invisible Children. The club will be raising money and collecting books for Sir Samuel Baker Secondary School in the Schools for Schools program. Money raised goes to student scholarships, construction of facilities, water and sanitation, supply of books and teaching aids, teacher capacity development, and the introduction of new technologies.

UGANDAPELLA an event that will feature IC's a cappella groups and advocate for the organization. It should occur in late spring and be a lot of fun :)
